Spring Half on Sunday

Bohermeen AC half marathon on Sunday 4 March. www.bohermeenac.com or www.runireland.ie

Bohermeen Athletic Club will add a new dimension to Meath athletics in 2012, when for the first time in over 25 years an open half marathon 13.1 miles event will be promoted by the Bohermeen club. The first half marathon in Ireland took place in Bohermeen in April 1973 when it was a Meath championship which grew into a Leinster and eventually a National championship. The aim of the promotion is to give runners an early confidence booster for the spring marathons in places near and far like Paris, London, Boston, Connemara, Belfast, Newry and Cork.

As well as being open to all the event will both form part of the Meath Road Running League and be recognised as the Meath Championship with official county medals being awarded in addition to club prizes.

Chip timing will apply to the half marathon event with start and finish gantry capturing accurate times. Finish positions for individual and team prizes will be determined by the order in which participants cross the line. Male and female participants will be counted separately for team prizes i.e. as if two distinct races had taken place.

Shane and Clare on the podium

The Leinster indoor athletic championships were held at Nenagh over the weekend and Trim athletes had a number of medal winning performances there. Shane Aston finished second in the U19 shot putt and third in the high jump. Clare McLernon was second in the under 18 high jump. Oisin Walsh ran 8.60 to finish 6th in the under 16 60metres. Conor Daniel ran well in the 1500m but finished outside the medals in his first indoor championships event.

New Look Na Fianna in Nenagh

The Leinster Juvenile Indoor championships took place on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th February in Nenagh, Co Tipperary. As always there was a big crowd in attendance especially from the larger track & field clubs such as Kilkenny City Harriers, St Laurence O'Toole, Menapians and St Abbans. This year the Na Fianna athletes would not go unnoticed, kitted out in our new lime green sweatshirts, we could be spotted from any angle in the stadium. However, it wasn't just our sweatshirts that caught attention but some of our athletes performances also.

As has been the trend over the last few years, the standard of competition in sprints has increased and this year was no exception. Gone are the days when the fastest wispy kids in the club lined up to run the 60m or the 200m. Nowadays they are powerful, focused and tactically aware so to progress out of your heat is a major achievement. Na Fianna athletes have also embraced these changes and were rewarded for it as can be seen from our results.

U13 girls 600m Amy Clarke 1st, Sarah Clarke 4th
60mH Deirdre Murray 5th
U16 girls 200m Laura Heneghan 2nd, Ciara Heneghan 4th
800m Ashling O'Hare 3rd
shot Emma Coffey 3rd
U18 girls 300m Alison Daly 2nd
800m Alison Daly 3rd

Dunboyne in action at Nenagh

Three athletes from Dunboyne AC competed at the Leinster Indoor Juvenile Championships held in Nenagh on 18th and 19th February 2012.

Darragh Costigan won the Boys U16 60m Hurdles on Saturday and jumped 5.60m in the Long jump, a new PB and good enough for the bronze medal. Darragh returned on Sunday to win the High Jump with a new PB of 1.74m.

Josh Costigan was second in the Boys U12 High Jump, jumping 1.20m. He also took a bad fall in the heats of the 60m Hurdles.

Caolean O'Flaherty was very unlucky in the Boys U15 Long Jump, jumping 4.22m and finishing in 4th position. Caolean then competed in the heats of 60m where he finished 3rd, narrowly missing out on a place in the final.

Both Darragh and Josh have now qualified for the All Ireland Indoor Championships to be held in March.

As a reminder, last week at the Northern Ireland Indoor Championships, held in conjunction with the All Ireland Indoor Championships at the Odyssey Arena Belfast on the 11th and 12th February 2012, Darragh Costigan won the Boys U16 Long Jump competition with a jump of 5.43m and also won the silver medal in the High Jump, jumping 1.65m.
Keith Doherty cleared 3.80 in the senior men's POLE VAULT, which was good enough for 7th place for 19 year old Keith, this was his first competition in 2 years.

CHILDREN’S OFFICER REPORT- 2011

MEATH COUNTY BOARD AGM FEBRUARY 2012

___________________________________________

During the past year all clubs were sent Garda Vetting forms from AAI. All those who are involved in working with young people should now be vetted and it is up to each club to ensure that new members comply with this requirement into the future.

In March, the Irish Sports council held an information day on Code of EthcIs in Maynooth. Copies of the presentations are freely available online at: http://www.irishsportscouncil.ie/Participation/Code_of_Ethics/

In April 2011, Moira and Domhnall distributed hard copies of the AAI “Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Children in Athletics”, and related material on Bullying policies to Children's Officers around the county. At this time, Domhnall also developed an electronic system to allow clubs update their Children's Officer contacts online, but to date this has not been fully deployed.

In June, following the formation of a new government, the Department of Children and Youth Affairs was established, and Frances Fitzgerald, a TD for Dublin Midwest, was appointed as Ireland's first Minister for Children.

In July, Moira and Michael Lane, Children’s Officer for Westmeath, were appointed Liaison Officers to work with the Parent’s of a child who wanted to transfer from a Meath club to a club outside of Meath. Michael and Moira met with the childs’ parent’s in August, and after this discussion it was felt the child stay with their own club. It was the first such case to come before us under the guidelines, and to some degree, as Brian Dowling said, we were “trailblazing”. If a case does ever arise again, guidelines should be in place to deal with the matter.

Moira put together an up to date list of all Children’s Officers for 2011, and every Primary school in Meath who did the Mini Athletics programme was given a copy.

In September Domhnall was appointed as a Child Protection Officer to the Leinster Board.

In December, Athletics Ireland announced that they would be providing Code of Ethics courses free of charge to any club that wishes to avail of one. The course is 3 hours in duration and requires a minimum of 10 participants and a maximum of 16. The instructors for the course are Moira Aston and Kieron Stout, and any club wishing to book a course should contact Moira directly.

During the past 12 months there were no matters concerning child welfare that were brought to our attention. I think it is worth pointing out that the most recent ISC guidelines on code of ethics are now 6 years old. In the coming year I would like to consult with the members of this board to establish a set of guidelines on best practices concerning the use of internet based "social" networks. As a starting point I would suggest that people refer to the work of Mr. John Laffan who is the Executive Director of the Office for Internet Safety (www.internetsafety.ie). During the past year he made a presentation entitled " Using the Internet and Associated Communications Tools and Keeping Children and Young People Safe". As clubs continue to develop their on-line presence, we as a community must ensure that the same high standards we have adopted for the training field are carried over into the virtual world to keep the young people of our clubs safe.

Regards,
Moira Peppard & Domhnall O’Hanlon

The Report of Secretary Philip Cogavin to Meath Athletics 2012 convention

Madam President, Mr. Chairman, Fellow Officers and Club Delegates,

I would like to welcome you all here this evening to our County Convention for 2012. It is heartening to see so many clubs represented here tonight, at what is arguably the most important forum for the sport of athletics within our county.

Over the past 12 months I have been pleased to see the willingness, cooperation and dedication of my fellow officers. They are a credit to our sport. Indeed it would be invidious and particularly divisive to single anyone out for specific mention, so here goes. For many of you the only appreciation of some of the work done by our Chairman is the early morning time stamp on some of the various emails that he delights in sending to us all. His dedication goes far beyond that, though. If there is any athletics event on anywhere in the county he will inevitably be there, either competing or helping out. He also somehow manages to fit in regular provincial and national body meetings between calving, milking and cutting his grass. Without his support, wise counsel and friendship my job would be much more onerous. He has always made himself available, and while we may not agree on everything, we do agree on enough to get things done.

It is important that we remember those who have helped in the running of our various events, and so I would like to thank Sharon, Oprah and the staff of the Sports Development Project for their continued excellence, hard work and attention to detail in the administration of our various championships and competitions. To Marie, Moira and Paul on the Primary Schools Project, many thanks for your enthusiasm, dedication and interest in the work you do in our primary schools and beyond.

Thanks also to those clubs who have hosted events on behalf of the County Board. We have seen the introduction of some new and challenging courses in our cross-country competitions recently. A particular word of thanks to those landowners who have facilitated us. Indeed, I would appeal to all clubs to strongly consider hosting events. No matter what facilities you have available, it is good for the sport for athletes to experience a diversity of venues, and there is a lot to be said for the thrill of competing on a “home” venue.

Our County Board meetings continue to attract a good attendance. The majority of decisions effecting competition are taken at these meetings and all clubs should ensure that they are represented in order that their points of view may be heard.

The essence of our sport is competition, so it is good to see the increase in numbers participating in the sport. We have seen unprecedented numbers competing in road races over the last year and indeed an increase in the number of races themselves. This is in the face of competition from unpermitted events, often clashing with established dates. While the running of road races is currently seen as some sort of cash cow for those seeking to fund raise, it is incumbent on the County Board to ensure that events are conducted to a standard, as Joe Running Public will not differentiate between permitted and unpermited events, to the detriment of our sport and events. It is imperative that registered members who may find themselves involved in such events should seek to have them run under an appropriate permit. When the current boom has burst, and the fund-raisers have moved on to the next craze, we will be left to manage the legacy.

Finally, I would like to thank you all for coming here this evening. Hopefully we will make good progress through the agenda and leave at a decent hour, with a job well done.

Chairmans Address to Meath Athletics convention 2012

Hon. President, Fellow Officers & Delegates,

On behalf of all of us I would like to thank our county president Sheila Mallon who attended our functions and events throughout the year. On my own behalf I want to extend a special word of thanks to my fellow officers for all their hard work during the year because without their combined efforts it would be impossible to successfully run the programme of events that we have on our yearly calendar. I want to thank all the clubs who gave their own facilities or organised facilities to host our championships. I would like to thank Philip for all his work during the year especially on the IT end. A special thanks is due to Treasurer Tommy Boshell who in his first year as treasurer kept as tight a rein on our finances as ever Rita did. Thanks is also due to Sharon & her staff in the Sport’s Development Programme, who do so much of the clerical work for us, which facilitates the efficient running of all our events and also to Moira Peppard and her team that bring athletics to the schools. I would like to thank our PRO and all the local media for their coverage of our events throughout the year and the Meath Local Sports Partnership who are doing so much to promote active lifestyles within the community.

It has been a good year both collectively and individually for Meath Athletics. Our juvenile athletes continue to make their mark at National level as is evident by the numbers receiving certificates at our Annual Awards Night. We tend to be stronger in the field events but this year we have seen the emergence of new talent in the younger age groups especially at the National Cross Country Championships.

At this stage I have to thank Gerard Heery for all his work as the senior team manager. The cross-country season was an unqualified success this year with both juvenile & senior teams doing well. The highlight of the cross country calendar was Sara Treacy’s victory in the senior ladies cross country and Andrew Ledwith taking silver in the men’s event. All our junior and adult teams now compete in section A of the all cross country championships – a feat only equalled by three other counties in the country. The disappointing aspect of the senior athletics was the National T&F League team which in 2011 did not seem to have the commitment to the competition that we had in previous years – now maybe this was due to our young team that had quite a few athletes tied up with exams. For 2012 we would hope to renew that commitment and make sure that we are in Tullamore for final’s day in August. As Gerard has said he will no longer managed the National T&F League team I want at this stage to thank him for the effort & work that he has put into his job over the last 5or 6 years - I can assure you unlike Premiership club chairmen I did not give him the push.

Our membership finished the year with a little over 2400 members, which was on a par with 2010. This year with the new club in Rathkenny hopefully we will break the 2500 barrier. The key to this will be maintaining our development in the schools, having top quality coaching for all levels of athletes within the county and that we have more events for all levels of athletes so that the athletics year does not end for some with just the Meath T&F Championships. At this stage I must acknowledge the help & support that we receive from our RDO Bart Rogers. Thanks is due to Maggie Higgins and Brigid Clarke in Development and Tom Clinton in Coaching for all their hard work in this regard. A worrying aspect however is the proposed cuts in the community employment scheme and how this will impinge on our Primary Schools team and also on the work done by the Sport’s Development Project, which is essential to us as a sporting body that relies wholly on the work and time of volunteers.

The beach run was again a great success and I would like to especially thank the members of my own club for their in help making the BBQ successful and to Paddy Mangan for marking out the course.

Last year I said that we needed to establish an athletic club in the north of the county. I am delighted that tonight we will formally welcome the Ratkenny club to the county board. We will help them in every way possible both financially and with coaching expertise to get them started in their first year so that they can get off to a good start. This week while looking at Meath county registrations I certainly have to compliment Ratkenny as already they have 75 members registered.

We will have our National Congress in April and while at this stage the battle lines for positions have not been drawn there will be changes at board level as the President and some of the chairs of national committees have completed their terms in office. I will however endeavour to have our full voting strength of 25 delegates in Cavan to push forward the views of Meath Athletics

Finally, I wish all our athletes, officials, county officers and club members a very successful and enjoyable year.

Public Relations Officer Report / Meath Athletics convention 2012

Looking back over the past twelve months it is heartening to reflect on the great progress which has been made in the promotion of our sport. This county has a number of very good media outlets which are supportive and cooperative to the sporting community in their reporting. The coverage given to our county championship events and awards night is greatly appreciated. The increased numbers taking part in the county running league events presents further opportunities for athletics to raise its profile. It is essential that the organising clubs make the most of this by engaging the local and national media with good pre event publicity material and follow up with prompt reports, results and photographs.

The involvement of the Irish Independent in the Dunboyne road race was a major public relations coup for the local club . I feel that the huge profile which resulted helped bring many new runners into the county for the rest of the league calendar. Many more clubs got up to speed on their online presence. The clubs and events promoted through websites, blogs and Facebook continues to grow and I’m sure the clubs involved will vouch for their effectiveness.

There remains a number of areas where improvements need to be made. The current blog site which I use for disseminating county board information is adequate but not ideal. Advise and cooperation from within the club ranks which would enable the setting up of a more professional website would be appreciated. Information about clubs, training times , contact details for officers etc... remains thin on the ground. Athletics is not yet a proscribed activity yet, so don’t be shy about sharing information which will benefit your club and raise its profile
I would like to thank the executive of Meath County Athletics Board , the Sports Development office staff , and the club PROs who provided me with results, reports and photographs during the year. A special word of thanks to Ger Heery & Brendan Meade for reporting back form events I was absent from.

Thanks to the Meath Chronicle, MNS, LMFM,I rish Runner, Drogheda Independent, L indie Naughton, Frank Greally, John Quirke, Racepix365, Chris Grant, Leinster Athletics , and AAI Marketing Department all other local media outlets for their cooperation, coverage and support during the past year.

Public Relations Officer Report Ciaran Tobin
Meath Athletics Board Convention / AGM 1 February 2012-02-01

Development Officers Report to 2012 Meath Convention

The secondary schools Track & Field competition was held on 10th April in Claremont Stadium. 18 schools were involved this year, 2 more than last year. St Peters College Dunboyne once again took the boys’ school title however Scoil Mhuire took the girls’ title for the first time ever.
The secondary schools Cross Country competition was held on the 16th November. This was our second year to run this competition in November and once again it proved very successful. 16 schools did compete, an increase of 3 on last years figures. As always the grounds and conditions at Gormanston College were perfect.

The primary schools Cross Country competition has gotten underway. The wet weather conditions caused some cancellations before Christmas, however we hope to run the county final for this in March. Any schools still wishing to take part would be most welcome.
The implementation of the Little Athletics Programme in the primary schools has continued and is still proving to be very popular. The work done by Paul Tully, Moira Peppard and Maria Matthews is of immense importance not just to Meath athletics but athletics in general. This is the first impression a lot of the schools get of athletics so we are very lucky the Little Athletics Programme is given in such a knowledgeable and professional manner. Moira will give a detailed report shortly on their year so far.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the girls in the office, in particular Sharon and Oprah, who do a lot of work in the organisation of our two secondary school events. Thanks also to all the volunteers from the clubs who help out at both events, in particular Brendan, Paddy and Tony who have not missed either event in the last 3 yrs.

Looking back over the year we have had our ups and downs as a county. Cross country has improved and seems to be going from strength to strength. However, our track & field is a little more erratic. We have lots of potential in our younger athletes, now is the time to develop them as individuals and also as a county team. We have the facilities, the athletes and the funds so what’s stopping us?

Maggie Higgins & Bridget Clarke

Same as it ever was

Meath County Board must listen to a lot of Talking Heads. The election of officers for 2012 resulted in a wholesale case of "Same as it ever was, same as it ever was" with the 2011 board returned en masse. The only exception being Gerard Heery who stayed on as cross country team manager but stood down from the same role with the national league squad where he was replaced by Maggie Higgins.

DUNBOYNE AC AGM, Wed 25/01/12

A year of great achievements
Members of Dunboyne AC met at the clubhouse on January 25th for the Annual General Meeting.
Looking back at the 2011 season highlights, the club can be proud of its achievements.

Committee officers thanked the re-elected chairman Sean Kinnane for his work and commitment.
The club has over 300 members, adults, juveniles and fit4life section, who meet around the track and participate in many races.
Dunboyne AC was largely represented in road races, cross country and athletics all year long with successful results. Thanks to the work done with our coach Garry O'Hanlon, the athletes have had the opportunity to benefit from his advice and improved their times.
Alongside our 400m track, a new Olympic hammer cage has been built to offer our athletes the best equipment to train and to host athletic competitions.
Our top athletes did well; 5 of them were competing at a national/international level with notable success.
Moreover, our club was very well represented in the local and county competitions, ours teams been many times on the podium.
The club did continue its key event of the year "Dunboyne 4 Miles road race", with a considerable increase of runners in 2011. To be noticed too, the "24 hour Torch Run" in the village, which took place despite heavy rain, and the BHAA road race hosted by the club.
Among our social events, Dunboyne AC organised a Family Fun Day with a popular pig race. Then, the Annual Dinner Dance ended the season under a festive note; many were present to celebrate the great night for the club.
