Meath leads the way in schools programme

The Primary Schools Mini Athletics Programme has been running for the past 4 years with the help and support of the Meath Athletics Board. The coaches are employed by FAS under the Community Employment Scheme on a yearly contract for a maximum of 3 years. The programme consists of throws, jumps, sprints and relays, but we would cover a particular event if the school requests.
They provide the programme to 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th classes, and the period allocated for each class is an hour. The programme is free of charge; its aim is to encourage children to join their local Athletics Club. They usually visit schools once a year but do revisit schools if requested. The coaches have covered approximately 87 schools from September 2010 to date, and are targeting the remaining schools in the County at present.
Last term the programme introduced “Sports Hall Athletics” to its schedule. This scheme is sponsored by the Meath Local Sports Partnership. The first school to undertake this new programme was a Drumbarragh National School and it ran for a training period of 6 weeks. A team of 48 athletes was chosen from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes to represent Meath in the Inter County Schools Hall Athletics Finals in Athlone in March 2011. Seven Counties competed in this competition and the school were placed 4th.
At present, the programme is working with Carnaross N.S and Yellow Furze N.S., and they will be selecting the top 24 athletes from each school to represent Meath in the Pre-qualifier National Inter Schools Championships in February 2012.
Secondary School Development
This September the development team provided the athletics programme to Loreto Secondary School, Navan, and introduced a module which covered Core Strength and Nutrition. This proved to be successful, and the school requested a follow-on lecture in Nutrition. In 2012, the coaches will be working with 2nd year students in three Secondary Schools in Meath.
The course coaches have completed a Disability Awareness Training Course in Sports with Aine Coogan, Sports Inclusion Disability Officer with MLSP. They felt there was a need to do this course because they have found a large number of children in classes with physical or intellectual disabilities. And they aim to give all children an opportunity in sport, this course provided us with the knowledge required to include these children in our programmes. The coaches who deliver this programmes are Moira Peppard is a level 2 coach with Trim Athletics Club. Maria Matthews is a level 1 coach with Navan Athletics Club. Paul Tully is a level 1 coach and Personal Trainer with Paul Tully Fitness. Contact Moira on 086 0878875 if you would like to have your school include in future programmes.

Results from AAI CC day 1

Link to the underage results from the AAI Cross country championships in Sligo

Sara wins national title

Sara Louise Treacy (Moynalvey-Kilcloone AC) won her first senior All Ireland Inter County Cross Country title on a very tough course at Sligo racecourse last Sunday. The heavy rain in Sligo on Saturday made what was already a tough course even harder but the Loughborough University student made light of the conditions with a faultless display of cross country running. From the gun Sara was with the leading group as they made their way around the course on the first of their 4 laps of this 8k race. Going out on their second lap the leading bunch of Treacy, Aoife Culhane (Dublin), Claire McCarthy & Lizzie Lee both from Cork and Kerry Harty (Down) had eked out a slight lead on the chasing runners. As they reached the far end of the course on their second lap gaps were starting to appear in the field but all the while Sara was running very smoothly and looked to be very much in control of the race. Going out on their third lap there were four athletes still together but with 4k left to race it was still too early for Sara to make her move.
As the athletes came around to take the bell going out on their final lap there was no doubt that of the leading quartet of Treacy, Culhane, McCarthy and Harty, Sara was going to be the ultimate winner of the race. The question was when would she make her decisive move. Then with about 1k to go Culhane fell and with that Sara seized her opportunity and opened up a gap on the other title contenders. As Sara made her way up the final hill to the cheers of the Meath supporters present she continued to press home her advantage to take the title with seventeen seconds to spare over Claire McCarthy and completed the 8k in a time of 31mins10secs. Aoife Culhane came in third place.
Meanwhile down the field Ann-Marie Smith (Navan AC) was battling hard to finish in 31st place in a time of 34mins59secs. Ann-Marie who lives and works in England but is originally from Navan came home specially for this race and was delighted with her performance as she is just back racing after recovering from injury. Emilia Dan (Dunboyne AC) finished in 39th place in a time of 36mins47secs and was the third Meath runner home. Ann Hunter (Dunshaughlin AC) was the fourth scorer for Meath when she finished in 48th place. Ann who was asked at the last minute by county board chairman Brendan Meade if she would run as on Saturday we had not got a complete team because so many of the athletes cried off due to injury or illness. Ann obliged and was not found wanting and because of her good run the team finished ahead of Galway to take the bronze medal in the Inter County event.
Sara will now lead the Irish team at the European Cross Country Championships next month.

Report By Brendan Meade, Chairman of Meath Athletics Board

Ledwith takes silver

Andrew Ledwith (Fr. Murphy AC) finished second in the men’s race over 10k and booked his place on the Irish team for the European Cross Country Championships. Ledwith who had won the title himself two years ago was up against defending champion Joe Sweeney (Dublin). From the gun Sweeney set the pace and as the athletes came around to go out on their second of five laps only Andrew was fit to stay with him. The Dublin athlete continued to set the pace even at this early stage and by the time they went out on their third lap he had opened up a lead on Andrew. As they raced through the third lap Ledwith was unable to bridge the gap but he himself had opened up a comfortable lead on the third placed runner.
Now with second place secure Andrew conserved his energy and was happy in the knowledge that second would secure him a place on the European Cross Country team. The race finished with Sweeney winning in a time of 32:07 with Andrew 44secs further back with Paul Pollock (Annadale Striders) third. The Meath team finished 6th on 260pts with David Fitzmaurice the second Meath finisher in 23rd place (he was the 4th placed U23 athlete), Mark Hoey (Star of the Sea) 43rd, Neville Reilly (Dunboyne) 45th, Loughlin Campion (St. Andrews) 68th and Derek Croal (Bohermeen) in 79th place making up our scoring 6. Robert Caffery (St. Brigids) in 84th place and Paul Gannon (Dunboyne) in 101st place made up the rest of the Meath team.

The Meath junior men’s team led by Luke Forde (Dunboyne) who finished in 15th place won the bronze medal. Rob Tully (Star of the Sea) was the second Meath finisher with Torlach Grant (Navan) next of the Meath athletes across the line. Sean Keany (Dunboyne) was the fourth scoring Meath athlete with Jim Marry (Star of the Sea) next across the line and completing the bronze medal winning team was Michael Flood (St. Brigids AC)

The junior ladies race which followed the junior men’s race saw the Meath girls go one better than the junior men when they won the silver medal. Elainne Plunkett (St. Brigids) finishing in 14th place led home the team. Rachel Neary (Na Fianna)15th , Shauna Moran (Dunshaughlin)16th , Ciara Rooney (Navan) in 20th , Alison Daly (Na Fianna) 21st place and Ali Shortt in 25th place completed the Meath team.

Report from Sara Treacy in Midland UK CC

MIDLAND WOMEN’S XC LEAGUE RACE1
NEWBOLD COMYN SAT. 12TH NOV 2011
A RACE REPORT.
Newbold Comyn was being kind today, the weather being more “printemps” than “hiver” . The ground was soft enough to take a spike without being boggy. There wasn’t even any water in the brook much to the disappointment of vicarious spectators.
There must have been 250 women competing in this increasingly popular event. So popular in fact there is a move afoot to create 2 divisions, giving the opportunity for promotion and demotion to take place..
In this event we are joined by our men’s team who despite being a bit messy do add to the occasion.
I digress,
From the gun Sara Treacy was up with the first three or four runners who included Chloe Richardson. A bit further back was Dannii Johnson, then Sophie Williams, finally Holly O’Meara, Tracy Clarke and Emily Evans.
As the race unfolded it became a battle at the front with Sara and a Loughborough athlete, taking advantage of a slight mistake in the course by the Loughborough girl Sara found herself leading and decided to go from a fair way out. Despite a strong challenge from her opponent there was no denying Sara her first victory at her first attempt in this event.
Meanwhile Claire Martin (Telford) edged Chloe into 5th place which is where she finished, a remarkable performance from a girl who is still three weeks shy of her 18th birthday. All donations to *********.
Dannii Johnson is still trying to decide whether she likes cross country or not but still made an invaluable contribution today to close the team scoring in 45th. Sophie Williams was pleased with her performance being still on the come back trail and finished 47th.
Holly O’Meara finished 162nd followed by Tracy Clarke resplendent in her first pair of XC spikes in 199th. Finally Emily Evans, also coming back after injury finished 210th.
The team finished 3rd behind the two University teams, Loughborough and Birmingham, which is like a victory, though we were only 2 points in front of Coventry and given Sara is no longer available this season we cannot be complacent.

Leinster intermediate and uneven ages cross country

The Meath cross-country teams had a successful day at the Leinster Uneven Age and Intermediate Cross Country Championships held in Adamstown, Co.Wexford last Sunday. The course in the centre of Adamstown village was very spectator friendly and the torrential rain received in Wexford on Friday had no effect on the ground conditions, which were good underfoot.
The under 11 girl’s team set the tone for the day when they finished 4th and qualified for the All Ireland’s which will take place in the Curragh in a month’s time. The U11 boy’s team went one place better when finishing in 3rd place over the 1500m race.
The first of our team gold medals came with the under 13 girl’s team when they finished with a total of 75 points to take the coveted title. The team of Sarah Clarke (Na Fianna) 4th, Eva O’Donovan (Navan) 6th, Martha Reidy (Fr. Murphy) 14th, Amy Clarke (Na Fianna) 15th, A. Cleary (St. Andrew’s) 17th and Aine O’Connor (Ratoath) 19th had packed very well to score a deserved win.
The boy’s under 13 team were not to be overshadowed by the girls as they won the title on a score of 55pts with Kevin McGrath and Alan Monaghan both from Bohermeen taking individual gold and silver medals. They were ably supported by Shane Hanley (St. Brigids) in 5th place, James Finnerty (Tara) 7th, Alex Hunter (Ratoath) 19th and Francis Marry (Star of the Sea) 21st.
The under 15 boy’s team finished 4th on 191pts to qualify for the All Irelands with Eoin Smyth (Tara) in 8th place, Ciaran McCarty (Ratoath) 23rd, Philip Marron (Ratoath) 28th, Conor Leech (Na Fianna) 37th, Ciaran Crowther (St. Andrews) 43rd and Mark Daly (Na Fianna) 52nd.
The boys under 17 team finished 4th on 138 pts with five Star of the Sea athletes in the counting six. Niall Cornyn (Dunboyne) broke up the possible six out of six scoring members for the East Meath club as they also had the 7th Meath athlete across the line in Luke Fox. Rob Tully finished in 8th place, Ciaran McGinley 17th, Andrew Coscoran 21st (all Star of the Sea), Niall Cornyn (Dunboyne) 28th, Cormac Costello 31st and Jim Marry 33rd both from Star the Sea. Star of the Sea were the 3rd placed club team in this race.
The intermediate ladies team finished 2nd to our old rivals Dublin when they had a total of 62 points. Emilia Dan (Dunboyne) was the leading Meath athlete when finishing 5th in the 4000m race. She was followed home by the Dunshaughlin duo of Ursula Byrne 14th and Linda Fahy 17th with Deirdre Fitzsimons (Dunboyne) in 26th place.
Mark Hoey (Star of the Sea) in winning the Intermediate Men’s Championship race over 8k led the Meath squad to team gold as well. Mark, who is now just back training after taking a well earned rest after his victory in the Dublin half marathon last September, was in the leading bunch of runners right from the start of the race. This group include Thomas Hayes (Kilkenny City Harriers) and Mick Kavannagh (Sli Culainn) and Neville Reilly (Dunboyne). With two laps of the six laps completed the group was whittled down to Hoey , Hayes and Kavannagh with Reilly in 4th place. The Meath man continued to set the pace leading this trio of athletes with the Kilkenny man and the Wicklow man alternating between 2nd and 3rd place. Then with 3k remaining the East Meath athlete stretched his legs and the race was now down to Thomas Hayes and Mark as Kavannagh fell back. Neville Reilly at this stage was cementing his position in 4th place while the rest of the Meath were battling well further down the field. Mark continued to press on and with 2k left to race he had broken Hayes and opened up gap on the Kilkenny man. Mark continued to press home his advantage so that going out on the last lap he had a forty metre lead. Mark came home in a time 27mins 34secs for the 8k and had a winning margin of seventeen seconds on Hayes with Kavannagh 3rd and Neville Reilly finishing in 4th place.
Ronan Wogan (Slane AC) in 17th, Loughlin Campion (St. Andrews) 24th, Robert Caffery (St. Brigids) 29th and Paul Gannon (Dunboyne) in 36th made up the rest of the scoring team finishing with a total of 111pts and taking the team prize in the process.

1 2 in Leinster novice

The Leinster novice, masters and even ages cross country took place on Sunday at Belvedere House , Mullingar. The superb parkland course held up very well to the recent heavy rainfall and was a good test for the two thousand athletes who took part in ten races.

Meath athletes performed very well in most of the categories. The most impressive performances of the day were in the mens novice race where Darragh Rennicks ,Bohermeen and Luke Forde, Dunboyne took control of the race when they emerged from a group of six frontrunners with two kilometres to go. They opened up a sizeable gap and delighted the Meath supporters with a powerful display of confident running . In the last five hundred metres the young Bohermeen runners struck for home to score an impressive victory ahead of this years revelation, Luke Forde. The county team of Rennicks, Forde, Neville Reilly , Dunboyne, Loughlin Campion, St Andrews, Robert Caffrey, St Brigids,Rory Kavanagh, Dunboyne got a total of 44 points to take the silver behind Dublin.

There was the usual strong display form the Meath womens masters team in the race for inter county honours. The ever improving Emeilia Dan from Dunboyne turned in a great performance to lead the county team home. When the final results are announced by Athletics Leinster it seems likely that the Dunshaughlin team of Linda Fahy, Ursula Byrne, Ann Hunter and the Na Fianna team of Imelda Clarke, Bridget Clarke, Maggie Higgins will be among the medal winning clubs.

The masters mens race saw strong performances once again by the irrepressible Dunshaughlin squad of Tommy Maher, Paddy Mangan, Shane Boyle, Derek Hunter, Benny Byrne and Paul O’Rourke turning in a great effort to secure second club team. The county M50 team finished second and was led home by Paddy Mangan.

In the juvenile races Shane Hanley, St Brigids continues to be the leading cross country runner of his age group by adding the under 12 title to the under 11 honour from last season. He led the impressive county team to provincial victory with three top ten finishers. Eoin Smith, was fourth and Kevin McGrath, Bohermeen. The Tara team of Smith, James Finnerty, Cormac O Dowd and Sean Byrne were an impressive second in the club category.

The boys under 16 team of Conor Rennicks, Bohermeen, 3rd, Andrew Coscoran,Star of the Sea, 4th, Gavin Maher, Dunshaughlin, 7th, Brian McGrath, Bohermeen, 10th, Niall Cornyn, Dunboyne,18th and Ben Clarke, Na Fianna,30th ran very well to finish second to Westmeath in the inter county category.

Na Fianna AC had some great performances from its quartet of Amy Clarke,2nd Sarah Clarke,7th, Emma Neary, 27th and Aideen Slattery,35th running well to get under 12 club silver and were joined by Annie Kavanagh Bohermeen and Hanna Gilligan, Trim in the county team which also earned a silver medal position.

Navan athletes Eva O Donovan and Ciara Rooney put in performances which will see them turning out for Leinster in the All Ireland even ages competition next month in Sligo.

The team manager Gerard Heery was very pleased with the turnout of Meath runners in most of the ten races and is hoping for a similar response from all clubs and their members at the uneven age and intermediate event at Adamstown, Co Wexford on Sunday 13 October.

Dunboyne in action

A total of 30 juvenile athletes from Dunboyne AC took part in the second day of the Meath Cross Country championships held at Baconstown on 9th October and a total
of 3 individual and 4 team medals were won making the trip very worthwhile.

First off were the girls U9 and Doireann Ni Flahartha won in style, leading from start to finish. Great running from Abigal Knox, Anna Griffin and Graine
Alyward ensured the girls were 2nd team home. Next up were the boys U9, and as Dunboyne had 8 athletes running, we had two teams. Conor Leane fell at the start
and gave at least 100m away to the rest of the field but finished strongly to finish one of the scorers on the Dunboyne A team which along with Marc Leane, Aidan
Hand and Dylan Smyth won the team event. Dunboyne B, comprising of Marco Blackwell, Luke O'Toole, Martin Campbell and Alex Brady also ran extremely well, and took
the silver team medals.

Sarah Wall won the girls U11 race by some distance with Victoria Knox, Aoibhinn Ni Flahartha and Ellen Smyth also running well. Sarah and Victoria will now compete on the
Meath team for the Leinster championships.
The boys U11 team of James Gavin, Adam Conlon, Josh Costigan and Daniel Kinnane also ran very well, with James, Adam and Josh making the Meath team.

The girls U13 team had a tough 2500m race where Grace Dunne finished 7th and Ailbhe Clancy 14th should make the Meath team and Emma Conlon and Jessica Knox also running well.

In the girls U15 race, Amy Coyne ran very well to claim the bronze individual medal.

5 boys U17 tackled a very demanding 5k course and were rewarded with the silver team medals and all should make the Meath team for the Leinster championships. The team were
Niall Cornyn, John Atling, Conor Noone, Darragh Flynn and Cormac Ahearne.

Juvenile Results - Day 1 Meath Cross Country

At the first day of the Meath Cross Country Championships at Ballinacree, there was a great turnout of Dunboyne juvenile athletes. In the first event of the day, the under 10 girls over 1,000m, Victoria Knox was placed first with Doireann Ni Fhlatharta in 3rd place. With Victoria and Doireann followed closely home by Aoibheann Ni Fhlatharta, Ellen Smyth, Nadine Ralph, and Jessica Clarke, Dunboyne won the team event.

The under 10 boys also won the team competition, with very good runs from Adam Conlon, Conor Leane, Mark Leane, Daniel Kinnane, Ciaran Lonergan, Patrick Burke and Dylan Smyth.

In the under 12 boys event, Dunboyne was represented by Sean Ryan and Michael Murphy. Sean and Michael both finished in the top 10 with Sean in 8th and Michael in 9th position and we can look forward to both running in the Leinster Cross Country Championships later in the month. In the under 12 girls, Janet Dan and Emma Conlon put in fine runs over a very testing 2,000m course.

The under 14 event was over 3000m. The team of Grace Dunne, Ailbhe Clancy and Emily Thornton had great runs, with all three finishing in the top 12. This gave Dunboyne the team prize and the D O'Brien perpetual cup.

In the under 16 event over a demanding 4,000m, Niall Cornyn and Michael Heavey both finished in the top ten with Niall 7th and Michael 9th. This performance put Dunboyne in third place in the team event.

Meath Novice and Masters Cross Country Championships

There was great success for Dunboyne in the Novice Cross Country Championships, with Dunboyne winning the team prize and Luke Forde claiming first place. This win was a great reward for the hard work Luke has put in over the last year and he can look forward to challenging for the Leinster title later in the month.Luke was followed home by Neville Reilly in second place. Neville who only recently returned from injury is sure to improve even more as the season progresses. Rory Kavanagh had a very good run and was third home for the club in his debut this season. Rory is sure to progress after this race. Following Rory home, and completing the scoring for the winning team was our track specialist Michael Cornyn, who showed that the mud and hills pose no problem to him.

The Masters team of Tom Fallon, Tony O'Neill and Ray MitchellI all had good runs.

In the women's novice event, Emilia Dan finished just outside the medals in 4th position and Deirdre Fitzsiomons also had a good run.

Athlone 3/4 Marathon

Paul Gannon put in a fine perfromance and finished in a time of 2.18.

Star of the Sea Report and Results

Star of the Sea AC held their 23rd Annual Cross Country Meeting on September 25th 2011 in damp conditions on the hills of East Meath last Sunday. The rain over East Meath was light and refreshing and did not deter the crowd of 600 visitors to Greenanstown who were treated to great racing through all age groups from the U9’s to the last race on the programme the senior men’s race. Once again we had athletes from as far apart as Wicklow to Belfast and were particularly well supported by our neighbouring counties of Westmeath and Louth. The club would like to thank our sponsors FBD Insurances and all our volunteers on the day that help to make the event run so smoothly.
