Paddy is a Bolton Wonder

International Schools Cross Country Championships - Canon Slade School, Bolton, England - Saturday 22nd March 2014
Paddy Maher, representing Dunshaughlin Community College recorded a historic win in the Junior Boys race at the International Schools Cross Country Championships, held at Canon Slade High School, in Bolton, England on Saturday. This was Paddy’s first time to wear an Irish Vest, having earned the right with his convincing win at the All Ireland Championships in Cork 2 weeks ago. The race pitted the top 8 runners from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales who had come through the various regional qualifiers to get to this elite level. Paddy has no fear and from the gun he went into the lead and pushed the pace over the tough Lancashire terrain and going out on the last lap of the 4,600 metres trip it was only the English champion Mathew Willis that was still with him.
The race was made more difficult for all with the sleet shower that was now falling and just before entering the wooded section Willis made a surge into the lead as Paddy tripped and fell  but he quickly picked himself up and regained the lead. The very talented and highly fancied English lad went with him and with 300 metres remaining he moved up on Paddy’s shoulder again but another injection of pace from Paddy on the final hill got him 5 metres clear and he sprinted home for a fantastic win by 15 metres which was the first by an Irish athlete in this race for almost 20 years.
Paddy had also the honour of leading the Irish team to the silver medals as he dedicated his win to his late Uncle and Godfather Billy.
As with horses Paddy’s bloodline is good as his dad and coach Tommy represented Ireland 12 times, the first at Cardiff Castle in November 1988 and followed that up with 4 appearances at World Championships ( World Cross Country – Stavanger 1989 and Antwerp 1991, World Half Marathon – Newcastle 1992 and Brussels 1993).
It was a really good day for young Meath athletes as another Dunshaughlin Community College student Jarlath Jordan finished 20thin Paddy’s race and also picked up a team silver. Jarlath who competes with Tara AC has made great progress in the last 12 months and young St Peters Dunboyne student Nicola Duffy was an impressive 15th in the Junior Girls race. Nicola was capping off a great cross country season which saw her take the bronze medal in the National Championships in Santry last November and the Irish Schools in Cork”

Dunboyne AC AGM

Members of Dunboyne AC met at DuNboyne Castle on January 29th for the Annual General Meeting.
Looking back at the 2013 season, this has been another great and successful year for the club.

Chairman Michael Cornyn, club Captain Tommy Mc Donnell and Coach Tonny O’Neil mentioned some highlights:

-          Keith Doherty winning titles in pole vault and winning senior athlete of the Year.
-          Padraig White and James Mc Cabe competing internationally
-          Michael Hanlon winning the Conway Trophy and Mick Quinn Trophy in all Ireland Schools
-          Dunboyne AC won 1 gold and 3 silver medals in Master Track&Field.
-          Juveniles competed in Meath, Leinster and All Ireland
-          Athletes of the year: Keith Doherty, Emilia Dan, Nicola Mc Kiernan and Noreen Geoghan, Aoiffe Kerrigan and George Hutton

Dunboyne AC Chairman congratulated both Seamus Brady for his great job as President of Meath County Board and Secreatry John Holian as Meath County Board Secretary.
Michael Cornyn thanked all the members for the huge support during the year, especially former chairmen Sean and Martin and also vice chairman Theresa Smith.

Few words from President Sean Conroy to celebrate the work, the dedication and achievements of all members and volunteers. Everybody contributes to the success of the club.

The club was founded in 1928 and celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2013. With almost 800 members, adults, juveniles and fit4life section, the club continues to grow. Members meet around our 400m track and participate in many races. The big project for the coming year is the upgrade of the track.

Dunboyne AC was largely represented in road races, cross country and athletics all year long with successful results.
Our top athletes did well; few of them were competing at a national/international level with notable success.
Moreover, the club was very well represented in the local and county competitions, teams been many times on the podium.
The club did continue its key event of the year "Dunboyne 4 Miles road race", with almost 1000 runners participating. A huge crowd came to The Cow Park, used to host the Leinster Cross Country. Members participated as well in the Winter League and Christmas Run organised by Josephine and Liam Murtagh.
Were introduced in 2013, two new programs: Couch to 5K and Fit4Youth with an amazing turn out. The Fit4Life section was again very active and popular thanks to the efforts put by its group leaders.
Outside the track, social events such as Family Fun Day, the Annual Dinner Dance in Dunboyne Castle, Fit4Life Award Night played again a key role in the life of the club.

Competition Sec.

AAI Intermediate and masters online entry.

To All Clubs,
These Championships will take place in Dunboyne on Sunday 23rd February 2014. We want to field strong teams in both male and female intermediate and master races as the Championships are taking place within the county.
The development races for juvenile are U11, 13, 15 & 17 ages. 2013 ages apply for the development events and later for the inter county cross country relays.
Juvenile Development Events are open to athletes who HAVE NOT WON an Individual, Regional, County or Club Cross Country medal at the National Championships.
The selectors want clubs to email me back with athletes willing to run on the day.
Those athletes that competed in the Leinster Senior Cross Country Championships in Ballyroan for the county will be automatically included in the teams.
The county would like all athletes to make themselves available for selection and the management team and county board will be disappointed if athletes who do not make themselves available compete in similar races  or distances the week before or the week after the Dunboyne event.
 Regards,
 Brendan Meade
